Buying guide
Pashmina is the fine undercoat of the Changthangi goat, spun and woven into very soft, light cloth. It is expensive because the fibre is scarce. Most shawls sold at everyday prices are wool or wool blends made in the pashmina or dhussa style, and they are good winter shawls in their own right.
Genuine pashmina is very fine, drapes softly and slips through a ring, but a ring test alone proves little. The reliable signs are a lab or maker certificate and a price that matches the fibre. If a listing says only wool, treat it as a wool shawl.
A plain dhussa-style wrap suits men over a kurta or a jacket. A shawl with a golden or embroidered border suits women for evening events. Fold it in half lengthways for extra warmth.
